To plan a surprise proposal in Altos de Chavón, choose one of its most romantic spots, such as the Chavón River viewpoints, the Fuente de los Peces or the amphitheater. Church-facing spots may also be possible when the location approves them for your date. Then request the park permit and pay the fee before the session, and agree on a plan with your photographer: either a completely secret proposal, or a couples photoshoot that turns into a proposal. Sessions can start from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM at the latest.
Altos de Chavón is one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic: a village inspired by Mediterranean and Italian hill towns, with stone architecture, nature and views over the Chavón River. It is a landscape completely different from what you usually see in the Caribbean. Every corner looks like a painting, which makes it the perfect alternative to the classic beach proposal. These are the spots and the plan we use as proposal photographers there.

Our 6 Favorite Proposal Spots in Altos de Chavón
Access note: We confirm with the Altos de Chavón office whether photos are permitted in front of St. Stanislaus Church and at the small fountain for your date. Approval for the village does not by itself confirm access to these church-facing spots. If they are unavailable, we plan the proposal at a river viewpoint, the Fuente de los Peces or the amphitheater.
1. In Front of St. Stanislaus Church (Confirm Access First)
This is an iconic backdrop in Altos de Chavón, but we suggest it only after the office confirms that photography in front of the church is allowed for your date. Weddings and private events may also affect access, so we always agree on another spot in advance.
2. The Small Fountain Facing the Church (If Approved)
Just in front of the church there is a small fountain with the church right behind it. You are in the foreground and the church frames you in the background. In our experience, this spot photographs even better than standing right next to the church, and it can be a beautiful place for the moment you kneel when the office specifically approves photography at this spot for your date.
3. The Chavón River Viewpoint at Plaza Chavón
This viewpoint is wide and open, with a beautiful view over the river. Asking the question while you are both looking out over the Chavón River is a simple, very romantic moment.
4. Fuente de los Peces, the Fountain With the Obelisk
Known as the Fuente de los Peces (Fountain of the Fish), this large, elegant fountain is crowned by an obelisk. It is one of the coolest spots in the village, with a constant breeze, which your partner will appreciate on a warm afternoon.
5. The Amphitheater
The amphitheater looks like a Roman arena. A proposal here feels timeless and grand, and the stone tiers create a stunning backdrop.
6. The Hidden River Viewpoint Down the Stairs
Going down the stairs, there is a small viewpoint over the Chavón River that few visitors find. It feels almost private, which makes it extraordinary for couples who want an intimate proposal away from other people.

Two Ways We Plan Your Proposal
Option 1: A Completely Secret Proposal
Your partner knows nothing. For them, it is just a walk through the village. We agree in advance on the time, the spot and what you will both be wearing. We walk around like any other tourists, and the moment the proposal starts, we take out our cameras and photograph it from different angles.
Option 2: A Couples Photoshoot That Becomes a Proposal
Your partner knows there will be a photoshoot, but thinks it is a couples session or something included with the visit. We photograph you normally, and when we reach the spot we agreed on, we give you a signal. You propose, and we are ready with every camera to capture it.

What to Wear for a Proposal in Altos de Chavón
- For her: a long dress that is not too tight, in a classic style and soft neutral colors. Short dresses, pants and shorts are not the best choice for a moment like this.
- For him: long trousers and a simple, elegant shirt, in colors that coordinate with hers.
- For both: comfortable shoes. The ground in Altos de Chavón is made of uneven stone, so heels and slippery soles are a risk.
Timing: When to Plan Your Proposal
Photoshoots in Altos de Chavón can start from 9:00 AM, and the latest start time is 5:00 PM. A late-afternoon start, between 4:00 and 5:00 PM, gives you softer light and cooler temperatures. From November to February, when the sun sets earlier, a 5:00 PM start lets you catch the warm light before sunset.
Altos de Chavón also hosts weddings and private events. We never interrupt them, so if the church is busy, we move to one of the other spots on this list.
Before the Session: Permit and Fee
Always remember: the permit must be requested and the fee must be paid before the session. Based on our booking experience, the fee is US$100 for Casa de Campo guests and property owners or US$200 for visitors staying outside the resort. Casa de Campo asks for at least 72 hours’ notice. We recommend sending the request four days ahead because authorization sometimes arrives only the day before.
Paying at the booth together could give the surprise away. That is why, for secret proposals, we can pay the fee ourselves and you reimburse us in cash afterward, so your partner never suspects a thing.
From Our Experience: Take Your Time
No two proposals are alike. Every reaction is different and wonderful, and the moment lasts only a few seconds. Our advice to everyone who is about to propose: take your time, do everything slowly, and enjoy it. We will take care of capturing it.
